We make a lot of jewelry here at Chart that honors Mother's and their relationships to their families and special places, but we wanted to share this story because it really touched our hearts.

" Pulpit Harbor is one of many beautiful places that my family has visited on our sailboat- Seaglass. As young kids, my parents showed us what true family vacations were, on our then, small sailboat going from island to island on the coast of Maine. As an adult, my ideal summer vacation is still traveling back to Maine to sail with my parents out of Rockland Harbor. Even though I love my landlocked home of Colorado, Maine is my dream place; the place I escape to in real life and in my mind.

The Captain of Seaglass, my dad, called me often from the helm of his boat. I'd request water splashing over the phone line and he always obliged though jokingly protesting that he'd fall in. I loved being his first mate on their boat.

My dad died from a brain tumor in August of 09' at the young and otherwise healthy age of 67. We've since sold the boat and my mother, and east coaster through and through, has decided to move to Colorado to be close to us. Since we have wonderful memories of sailing to Pulpit Harbor and we scattered my dad's ashes there, I felt that my mom needed a little piece of Pulpit Harbor to wear once she becomes a western girl. I know she will love it. Thank you so much for this one of a kind piece"

Precious memories of Winter Harbor, Maine...

"I spent the first three years of my life as a resident of Winter Harbor, my grandparents lived right across the road. After moving away and as soon as school was out, I would spend the entire summer in Winter Harbor with them, until I graduated from high school. For as far back as I can remember, my grandfather was a lobster fisherman in Winter Harbor and we often hauled traps in his boat; traps we had made together in the barn.

My family, all 40 of us, have been back to Winter Harbor for a family reunion the last 58 years. I haven't missed one year!

This key chain reminds me to be thankful for my heritage and for the precious memories of Winter Harbor, Maine."

Remembering special places is a wonderful way to celebrate a wedding anniversary:

I ordered cuff links for my husband. I wanted to capture two special places. The first area is Sprite Island in Norwalk Harbor. This is where my husband proposed to me on November 17th, 1995. The second area is Harbour Court in Newport RI. It is located in Breton Cove in Newport Harbor. This is where we had our wedding reception. We chose Newport because this is where we first met and fell in love. I thought these would be the perfect anniversary present.

Honoring a father's special memories:

My dad owns what is called "The Red Camp" in Aroostook County, with several other men. They go twice a year, spring fishing and fall hunting. I have never been since no girls are allowed. I am sure they have a wonderful time but I don't have any memories to share. Yet , it remains a special place for my father. I look forward to giving it to my dad for Father's Day.

How one couple charted their life together:

In 2001, my girlfriend and I were members of the Maine Island Trail Association. We charted several weekend kayak trips. We would pack 2 -3 days of supplies and paddle from island to island. One weekend we found a quiet tent site, with a outcropping of rocks shaped like a sleeping dog. We enjoyed watching early summer sunsets, and walking on our private white crushed-shell beach. We listened to the waves crashing and an occasional exhale from a passing porpoise. It was just the two of us and the sun dipping somewhere between Isle au Haux and Vinalhaven. It came naturally to me as the perfect time to pop the question. Fortunately, she said yes and we were married one year later on Georgetown Island and had our first child the following year. We have not returned to our island since our engagement, but it is a special place that is dear to both of us. This gift will help both of us remember the night we looked into each others eyes and charted a life together.

There is no place like home.

My daughter loved her key chain. She "got it" immediately. It was a chart of where our house is- so she looked at it for a while and said, "Is this home?". And I said, "Yes, now that you are graduated and 'leaving home' you'll always be able to find your way back." It was really good!

Another New Jersey location but this time in Kingston (a boutique-y shopping area next to Princeton University). We loved designing these beauties from topo maps. We met owner, Laraine, at the show in Atlanta and she fell in love with the idea of creating a line to feature the college and other areas nearby.

Lobster diving memories to last a lifetime, what a great way to say Happy Birthday!

My father really loves his belt buckle with the Boston Harbor on it. He dives for lobsters there once a year, as well as having lived in the area his whole life. He also loves belt buckles and things that will start a conversation, so this was the perfect gift for his 70th birthday. He's just trying to deal with people wanting a closer look at the buckle while he is wearing it- that could be a little bit awkward!

We were touched when Marilyn shared her struggle of attaining a correct diagnosis for cancer. What a beautiful way to say thank you!

This is for my doctor who sails out of Lihue Harbor, Kauai, HI. While I work as an RN at the hospital with him, I got this piece of jewelry for him after he successfully diagnosed me with cancer. I had been misdiagnosed for 5 months prior to becoming his patient. He is a member of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club and enjoys sailing. I found out about you in the Coastal Living Magazine and I though this would be a great ocean themed gift for someone whom I am forever thankful for. I wanted to present him with this key ring as a reminder of his free time on the water because that is exactly what he gave me, more free time.

Hello! My name is Val Redpath and I am the studio and production assistant at Chart Metalworks. I have worked at Chart for nearly a year and my main task is to polish the metal. I love working for a small Maine based business. I always enjoy seeing the transformation from raw materials to a beautiful finished product. I have lived in Portland for 10 years now. In the past year working on Custom House Wharf has really deepened my appreciation for Portland's working waterfront. It was a chilling -10 degrees this morning when Charlotte and I came to work. It was an spectacular site to see the Atlantic Ocean smoking, the frigid water was actually warmer than the air. If you have ever swam in the Maine ocean, even in August, you would know it's cold sting.

When I am not at Chart, I enjoy spending time with my family. I have three year old son, Parker, who keeps me very busy. I also enjoy gardening, yoga, cooking, and creating my own jewelry.

Next stop...NYC!!

John is making his way back to the Northeast! We are so happy to have had great success at the the Atlanta and Orlando trade shows. John has been on the road and working hard, but he is going to be in for a cold surprise when he leaves sunny Florida and beach side Hilton Head, NC to arrive in chilly New York for the International Gift Fair.

This summer we had the pleasure of working with Rudders on Catawba Island, Ohio. Catawba Island, actually a peninsula, is located on the Southwestern tip of Lake Erie. Due to its sheltered bays and inlets and low land elevation along the shore, it has become one of the preferred areas in the region for pleasure boat owners to dock and store their boat. Let's just say our pieces were a hit!

Good Day Maine Interview

Back in June we had the proud honor of being one of five local businesses to win an Entreverge Award from Propel, an affiliate of the Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce.

It was quite an accolade and we were honored to be in such good company. For more details on the award and the winners, have a look at Flyte New Media's blog about the win.

As part of the award we got to be interviewed by Erin Ovalle of Fox 23's Good Day Maine.

We drove out early this morning to the studio and the live interview went off without... well... maybe only a few hitches here and there at 8:10.

(and quite possibly the cutest dog ever!)

Last spring we decided it was the right time to get a dog. We adopted this little guy ('Riley') from Animal Shelters in Maine. That was well over a year ago and I must say that we are VERY lucky. You just never know what you're in for when you take on the responsibility of dog ownership. Riley has been a complete delight and everyone that meets him happens to agree.

You can catch Riley in our studio most days. He's a bit lazy and so we give him one day off a week to stay at home and sleep on his favorite chair. Otherwise, he's in the throws of the studio. John seems to think if he can just figure out a way for him to grow opposable thumbs, he could be of good use to us.

He's good use to us already, making everyone laugh and smile in the workplace. It's a great day when you get to bring your dog to work.

V I N A L H A V E N

We had a successful trunk show last Saturday out on Vinalhaven, Maine just an hour and 15 minute ferry ride from Rockland. Per usual, our entire trip (ferry ride included) was splendid. The weather cooperated and lots of locals and visitors placed their orders with custom images. We showed off our new Recycled Chart Collection (coming soon online!) and had lots of oohs and aahs about these unique one-of-a-kind pieces.

Monday Chart Story: Janet Wyper, Beauchamp Point, Rockport HarborME

Here's a great story from Midcoast Maine. Janet customized a Rockport Harbor keychain featuring Beauchamp Point for her husband. I'll let Janet tell it in her own words:

My husband and I eloped on Valentine’s Day 25 years ago. I grew up in the Camden Rockport area and was living in Camden. My fiance was a sculptor working on his MFA in New York City. We had planned for him to drive up the night before and in the morning, ski down Beauchamp Point along the harbor to get married out on on "the ledges." But it rained all night, and melted a lot of the snow. In the morning we put on our mud boots and sloshed our way down the road with my neighbors who were our witnesses and my sister who as a notary public could marry us . We climbed over what snow was left on the muddy path and out to the ledge that hangs over Rockport Harbor. It was grey and windy and the sea spray dashed over the rocks. And it was perfect just as it was.

Monday Chart Story: Mac McKeever, Ferry Beach, ME

Here's real nice story from our friend at LL Bean, Mac Mckeever. Mac purchased a Ferry Beach Pendant for his wife to commemorate where he proposed. This is a bit romantic, fellas take notice, ladies enjoy.... I am going to leave this in Mac's words as I feel he tells the tale the best!

Wow...the piece is just gorgeous!

My wife and I have always been in love with the ocean (swimming, sailing, fly fishing, sunbathing, boating, etc.) and we love Ferry Beach...it's a beautiful location, relatively uncrowded (or it used to be) and the fishing is also very good. It kind of became one of our special places...swimming/bathing/fishing in the summer, x-country skiing in the winter, walks year-round, etc. Our dogs love it there too.

During the summer, they have these planes that drag banners advertising this and that flying up and down the beach from Saco to Scarborough. I arranged to have one of those planes drag a banner that proposed to my wife...it said "Jill will you marry me? I love you" and I brought the ring and some champagne to the beach. At the designated time, the plane flew by very close to us, I drew my wife's attention to it and she was blown away. I produced the ring (carefully, cleverly hidden in my fly box...a place I knew she'd never look) proposed and of course she said yes. The whole beach knew it was us and everyone clapped and cheered as I popped the champagne and poured...cool huh?

Thanks for everything...again, the Ferry Beach piece looks fantastic...she'll be thrilled...

We're trying to get back to regular posts, we accumulated a lot to tell in the last few months, now the trick is to just find the time to tell it...

And yes, I am amazingly affectionate of alliteration...

Today though, I'm going to back up and make mention of a great new spot we're located at in Cape May, NJ. Let's Start with a bit of history and background on this great historic coastal community.

The same year that the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, 1620, a Dutch captain, Cornelius Jacobsen Mey, was exploring the Delaware River and upon discovering this most southern point of current day New Jersey, he decided to name the peninsula Cape Mey, after himself. The spelling was later changed to Cape May. More than a century later in 1761 Cape May became the first seashore resort in America.

During the Victorian Era, Cape May was considered on of the top ten vacation resorts in the United States. Because of this, Cape May has a large Victorian heritage, evident in several hundred beautifully manicured houses throughout the city.

As of recent, Cape May has enjoyed a major renaissance. Many Victorian structures have been restored. Today small gingerbread houses stand beside magnificent Victorian showplaces.

We've been busy with orders for Father's Day and retailers getting ready to open for summer...so we're hard at work in the studio. Jen, pictured front left, has joined us to assist with various tasks in making the jewelry. John, center, has jumped in to help out with the cleaning and polishing. Val, top right, is busy keeping up with John to clean and polish. Charlotte is busy on the computer designing your orders!

Whirlwind of Activity

Well hi all, how are you?

It's been a bit since we've hit the blog and I apologize for that, but we've been out straight. If your asking why, check out that last post of ours from February, 17th... OMG, it's been 2 months... man that flew by! So anyway, the last blog I'm referring to is the Coastal Living feature, yup our first bit of National Press. It was great and brought us to another level and we're just now coming up for air!

Amongst all the orders, here's what else we've been up to in the mean time.

In March we attended our first wholesale trade show ever, The New England Products Trade Show! We had a great show opening 9 new accounts across New England... more info to come on them soon! We also won a Best New Product honorable mention for our belt buckle.

We established a connection in the great lakes to assist in opening accounts there! So far we have two new Great Lakes locations. Look for us in The Boardwalk and The Lobster Trap in Put-In-Bay and Rudder's in Catawba Ohio. Look for more Great Lakes locations soon.

TAKE CARE

There are many methods to keeping your silver jewelry sparkly--silver cleaners, polishing cloths, silver paste. These methods work best on a polished finish. Your CHART metalworks piece has a brushed silver finish.

The best way to clean your piece:

Gently rub the silver with a clean, dry green ScotchPad (yup, the kind you keep under the kitchen sink to scrub your pots & pans, just be sure to use a new one). Be careful not to make contact with the glass-like resin. Our bronze pieces will patina favorably but can also be cleaned in the same manner if you should desire. The clear resin surface can be buffed with a soft cloth and car/boat wax if you slightly scratch it.

When you are not wearing your CHART metalworks piece (the rare occasion!) just keep it in a sealed baggie. Remove as much air as you can before you seal the bag---it's the O2 that makes your silver tarnish.

The best way to avoid your CHART metalworks piece from tarnishing is to wear it. Constant friction against the silver slows the tarnishing process. Be prepared... your voice might get a work out because when others notice your unique piece they are bound to ask you about it...and then you've got to tell them the story behind your special place.

Today we celebrate a selection short but sweet CHART stories... Enjoy! We've got some great Valentine's Day stories coming soon, we'll post after Sunday, don't want to ruin the surprise!

We made a bronze zipper pull a while back for Amy, a mother of two. It features Glidden Point of New Castle, Maine. To some Glidden Point represents great oysters, to Amy it represents the piece of Maine to which she moved back from Massachusetts to raise her two kids.

For Marcel, a summer time Bangor resident, we made a St. John belt buckle where he winters.

Kahsi, a Portland resident, received a great medium silver pendant on leather cord of Castine to celebrate where she grew up. She liked it so much she gifted her sister a similar piece for Christmas!

For Kelly, a woman from Windham, she received a ring featuring a historic chart of Belize. Belize is where she was married.

Our friend Jen, a very talented South Portland photographer, you can view some of her work here, gifted a large silver pendant on sterling choker to of Scituate, Massachusetts to her aunt. It features the seaside cliffs as a memorial to where Jen's cousin is buried.

There are many stories to tell!

Today's CHART story is from Kerry Corthell who purchased a bracelet as a gift for her sister...Enjoy!

Corthell Lane, Hersey Cove, Pembroke, Maine

We have a one room wooden cabin (electricity, but an outhouse and you have to haul water from a nearby spring) in Hersey Cove, Pembroke, Maine where we spent many hours on our summer vacations finding treasures of all kinds on that beach. My grandfather lived in Pembroke and managed the Socony Mobil plant for decades. He originally had a couple hundred acres, giving about 25 acre ocean front lots to my father and his brother to build some camps.

In the early 70's my father bought the Puffin Pig in Whiting, Maine and my parents, brother and sister all lived in this one room camp through the winter while their house was being built next to the store. I even came up for Christmas and stayed in the camp with them that year. That was interesting going off to the outhouse at night before bed. It took my mother a long time to understand why my sister was so gracious in letting her 'go' first!

We sometimes think of how much the taxes are and how much it might have sold for over the years, but none of us want to let the land go and hope some day to be able to dig a well and put in a septic tank and add a bathroom on so that us 'old' folks can stay there for periods of time and enjoy our little piece of the real Maine.

Today's CHART story comes from a Portland, Maine yoga instructor who customized a pair of cuff links. This story reminds us that sometimes it's more about the memory than the place... Enjoy!

We made a pair of cuff links for a Portland yoga instructor featuring an "Unexploded Bomb Ordinance" sector of the chart. This alerts navigators of the possibility of unexploded bombs upon the ocean floor, never good to drop anchor in such areas! He remembered this from chart place mats his mother used to have when he was a child and always thought that part was cool. Well... that part definitely was cool and so are the cuff links we made to preserve the memory!

Did I just blink or is February already here...? And I didn't even have time to begin any of my New Years Resolutions yet... guess I'll put them off to next year and focus on creating great jewelry and accessories for you...

Here's a little of what we've been up to in the first month of 2010!

Thanks to everyone that stopped by to see our "Islands of Casco Bay" exhibit at Hilltop Coffee Shop. We enjoyed creating the pieces and displays and sharing a little bit of the history of the islands of Casco Bay for the last two months. So many great stories to tell, tell us yours!

We have a winner for our CHART story contest, it's a gem and a real treat but it's a gift so we can't share it yet, stay tuned!

We've opened up an exciting new account on St. John, USVI. If you're ever in the area stop by and check out Nest at the Marketplace in Cruz Bay. Within a couple of weeks they'll have a fine selection of our goodies on hand featuring St. John points of interest. They also stock all the essentials to adorn and inspire: bath, home, body, kitchen, tabletop, fine correspondence & lighting. We hope you can make it there soon!

Monday's CHART Story

Today's CHART story comes from Malissa of Massachusetts who customized a small bronze of leather cord with Higgins Beach.

Malissa writes:

Summer vacations at Higgins Beach began as an opportunity to connect with a childhood friend and her family living in Scarborough... our annual bonding sessions of beach, barbeques and the Yarmouth Clam Festival. Nine years later our vacation has become two glorious weeks in a sweet beach house shared with a growing extended family and visiting friends all enjoying the magic of Higgins.

There is nothing in the world like a communal puzzle permanently set up on the porch table, searching for crabs in the Spurwink at low tide, the annual Turkey Dinner at the clubhouse and the nightly "knotty pine tour." Babies have taken first steps, children have learned to kayak, teens have discussed the mysteries of life while having mad pillow fights (if only walls could talk) and grown ups have given in to true relaxation here.

Higgins Beach is the source of so many wonderful experiences and memories... it is our slice of Americana, our little piece of heaven. Thanks to Charlotte and John my beautiful custom CHART pendant will be a constant reminder of that special place especially during the Massachusetts winters as I count the days until we return.

Islands of Casco Bay: Clapboard, Stave & Cushing Islandss "Pastures"

Today we offer some history on Clapboard, the nearby Stave (any guess as to where they got their names), Bangs and Cushing Islands.

Trips to Clapboard Island were made by men from Richard Trelawney's fishing station on Richmond Island off of Cape Elizabeth. Workers would make small-boat excursions to Clapboard Island to cut timber and saw it into lumber. Guess what that used the lumber for?... That's right, clapboards. Providing an excellent example of Yankee ingenuity, the island quickly became know as Clapboard Island. Oddly enough, on nearby Stave Island, they cut barrel staves.

At one point Bangs Islands belonged to Joshua Bangs, you see where the name came from. In 1762 the island was purchased by Ezekiel Cushing for $2,300. $2,300 was an expensive price tag which remained higher than even some of the Casco Bay islands sold for in the 1960s! Upon purchasing the island, Ezekiel quickly renamed it Cushing Island.

Some time passed and Ezekiel sold the island back to Joshua Bangs. He renamed it Bangs Islands. Joshua's daughter inherited the island and married Jedediah Preble. Eventually, their son, the famous Commodore Edward Preble, father of the US Navy, inherited the island.

Commodore Preble then sold the island to Lemuel Cushing, a distant cousin of Ezekiel, and the name changed once again back to Cushing and has remained so since!

Islands of Casco Bay: Pound of Tea Island & Great Chebeague "A Lone Tree""

Today we offer history on some points a bit more North in the bay, Pound of Tea Island, located at the mouth of the Harraseeket River, Freeport and Indian Pt. on Great Chebeague.

Pound of Tea

Now how do you come up with a name like Pound of Tea? Well, legend has it that's the price for the island. It's said the original settlers purchased the island from American Indians for a single pound of tea. The island is now inhabited by the King and Queen of Pound of Tea.

Indian Point, Great Chebeague

A single tree stands alone on the windswept barren point know as Indian Point. This is the fruit of the labor of a man know as Wentworth Ricker. In 1791 Ricker settled on Great Chebeague and planted a garden upon Indian Point. One day he noticed a tiny oak growing from his garden patch. He carefully tended to it and eventually it grew to be the landmark and seamark known today to all navigators in the bay.

Monday's CHART Story... a day late

We're a day late again, this time due to the long weekend, but this story is worth the wait...

We made a pair of silver cuff links as a very thoughtful gift for a man by the name of F. Lee Bailey... yes... the F. Lee Bailey.

One features Princes Point, Falmouth, ME where he spent some time as a child, the other the Massachusettes Cape residence where he grew up. They fit him like a glove, much nicer than the one made ever so famous in that certain trial.

He wore them yesterday and has already sold several pairs to a couple judges and colleagues. We're trying to work out a rep agreement but he's a very well skilled speaker and negotiator...

Islands of Casco Bay: Peaks Island "Shore Dinners"

Today we offer a little more history on one of the more accessible Casco Bay Islands to Portland, Peaks Island.

Peaks has been enjoyed summer destination island for quite some time. Peaks was once a rendezvous point for Indians who went there for summer excursions and clambakes.

By 1850 William Jones had begun to turn Peaks Island into a tourist destination for day visitors from Portland. He turned his boarding house into a restaurant that served shore dinners. Guest enjoyed fresh lobsters, steamers and corn at Jones' Restaurant.

The arrival of the steam ferry to the area in the late 1800s brought a great tourist boom to Peaks. During this time Peaks boasted an extensive boardwalk, roller coasters, vaudeville acts, roller skating rinks and fireworks every evening.

The en vogue activity was to take the steam ferry from Portland to Peaks and take in a show. Ferry and show ticket cost all of twenty five cents.

Though today the boardwalk, roller coasters, roller skating rinks and daily fireworks no longer exists, elements of Jones' vision still do. Peaks still is a popular day trip destination from Portland.

These days every Sunday a great crowds coalesce upon Peaks to take in reggae at Jones' Landing, round trip ferry $4.10, buckets of beer $10. I've never seen a vaudeville act at Sunday reggae, but I sure have seen some interesting ones....

Hi there folks! Well, I know it's not due, but I received a "thank you" e-mail today with a picture and a great story behind a beautiful piece we made for the holidays and could not pass up posting today. Enjoy!

Just wanted to share a picture of the wonderful buckle you custom made for our 18 year old son. Josh has spent the last two years working on the Lily B out of Freeport Harbor. This year he will head off for college and we know he will always be able to find his way home to his family and the Maine coast when he has on his wonderful CHART metalworks buckle.

Islands of Casco Bay: Cliff Island - "Sunken Treasure"

Today we offer some history on Cliff Island . Watch out Johnny Depp, Casco Bay was once home to real life pirates!

Cliff Island was once the hide away for the villain pirate Captain Keiff. He lived alone on the island in a log hut. On stormy nights he would tie a lantern around the neck of his horse and would ride up and down the shore. Many a poor sailor mistook the glimmering light as a beacon guiding them to safety and misguided, would wreck upon the perilous ledges and reefs which surround the island.

The clever Captain Keiff would then salvage the cargo and kill any survivors. All his victims were buried in a grassy meadow on the island which is still know today as "Keiff's Garden."

Well today, Tuesday, Monday's CHART Story comes a day late but it's definitely not a dollar short!

We made a necklace for Kit of Christmas Cove. It's gorgeous, if you've never been, plan a trip. Christmas Cove is where Kit spends a good part of the summer, a place he looks forward to returning to every year to see his summer friends and spend time with his family. For Kit it's a place with many happy memories, sailing, boating, hiking, tennis and picnics. He wanted the necklace to help remind him during the winter months of happy summer days just around the corner. We're confident we accomplished that with his beautiful pendant.

Islands of Casco Bay: Haskell Island - "From Rats to Cats"

Today we offer some history on Haskell Island. If you're a rat or a cat lover you may not want to proceed.

There once was an old lobsterman who resided on Haskell Island. He lived there alone with the exception of a plague of rats. One day the mainlanders noticed there was no smoke coming from the old lobsterman's chimney and they sent over an expedition to check on him. To their horror, they found him dead and half eaten by rats.

Two younger lobstermen, the Mills brothers, devised a plan to get rid of the rats. They brought a dozen of the meanest, toughest and largest cats from the mainland to the island. The cats emerged triumphant over the rats but as the young and foolish lobstermen did not confine their selected rate eaters to one sex, soon, the island became overrun with feral cats.

The Mills brothers grew to love their cats and cared for them as they could, however, soon, it became impossible for visitors to land on the island without being attacked by the vicious pack. The Owner of the island demanded the young lobstermen remove their cats but they would not comply. One morning they awoke and ventured to check on their cats to sadly find the whole of Haskell covered with dead cats.

An investigation lead to the discovery that under cover of darkness a brave soul had invaded the island and spread poison for the cats to eat. The heartbroken Mills brothers never returned to Haskell Island again.

Islands of Casco Bay: Little & Great Chebeague - "Innovative Caretaker"

Today we offer some history on the Islands of Great and Little Chebeague. These stories are more fun then listennening to someone not from Chebeague try to pronounce "Chebeague!"

Chebeague is derived from the Indian word "Chibidisco" meaning "Island of Many Springs." An odd choice for an island located in a state with only two seasons: winter and visitors. They must have been referring to springs of the liquid sort.

The first owner of Great Chebeague was Sir Fernando Gorges, known as the "Father of Maine," or more commonly in his time "Senor Gorges."

The isolation of Great Chebeague has been threatened from time to time by plans for a bridge from Little John Island connected to the mainland via Cousins Island, but, so far, the idea has never come to fruition.

On Little Chebeague there used to be a fair sized colony but during World War II the government took over the island as a recreation center and evacuated all the inhabitants. After the war it was abandoned and left to a caretaker, his family and a flock of sheep, no joke.

Under normal circumstances in order to hail a ferry the caretaker would do what any other islander would do, no, not buy a ticket at Casco Bay Lines, but rather, hang a red lantern. However, in some seasons the island was so shrouded in fog that the ferry helmsman could not see the lantern and the caretaker had to be creative.

Under these circumstances the caretaker would catch one of his flock and tie it to the end of the wharf. Naturally the isolated sheep didn't like this very much so it plunged around, "baa-ing" at the top of its lungs. Upon hearing this the ferry helmsman, who couldn't miss the lamb made siren, would obediently stop.

Today's island stories are about the music.

Hussey Sound was home to a navy fueling depot during World War II. It was a hub of activity during this time. There were as many as 50 - 60 ships riding at anchor in Hussey's waiting to refuel.

Long Island boats some of the best sandy beaches in Maine. One of them is Singing Beach on the ocean side. When the wind and tide are just right, a curious musical tone can be heard.

Today's island story is about Mr. Bennett's Aquarium Cove. During the turn-of-the century tourism on Peaks Island attracted many entrepreneurs including Mr. Bennett, who decided he wanted to build an aquarium in the small cove on the North end of the island. he built a concrete floor and erected walls forming a pool with a promenade. Water was pumped in from Hussey Sound and the pool became home to small fish, an eel and a seal. Before the first ticket could be sold to the public, the eel ate the fish and the seal ate the eel and then died. The kindhearted Mr. Bennett despite this setback, decided to open the pool to the public and allowed all to swim for free.

Here's our CHART story for today. We made a beautiful Belt Buckle featuring Sanibel Island, Florida for a Boston resident by the name of Dawn.

It's a gift for her dear friend, L., who has a very special and splendid house down there that she shares every year, hosting all her rowing friends in the most glorious and generous way. Dawn thought the belt was the perfect way to say Thanks to L. and the perfect gift for someone who is so hard to find the right thing for.

Islands of Casco Bay history of Little Diamond Island

A little background information on the 5 piece silver bracelet in the "Islands of Casco Bay" show at Hilltop Coffee. The bracelet features Little Diamond Island, Peaks Island, Hussey Sound and Long Island.

A Diamond in the Rough

Up until 1900 Little Diamond consisted of a single working farm. Over the next decade it followed in the footsteps of Great Diamond and a summer colony was formed. The busiest cottage on the island was the Nissen cottage run as a boarding house. The cost to stay for one week was $4.00 and included room and board. The Nissen family later became the famous bakers of Maine and New England.

First Friday Art Walk

Please join us this Friday, December 4 between 5-8:00 p.m. at Hilltop Coffee Shop (99 Congress Street next to Rosemont Bakery) for our art exhibit "The Islands of Casco Bay."

We have been put a lot of work into this exhibit and are really excited about it. We think, and we have been told by the few who have seen it thus far, it is a really cool concept. If you enjoy art, jewelry, and history we think you will feel the same.

We would also love to see you, hear how your week or year has been (depending on when we saw you last). One of the best things about the holiday season are the gatherings, when you run into people at house parties and exhibits like this.

We hope you had a happy Thanksgiving with plenty of delicious food and loved ones to share it with.

Today's CHART metalworks story comes from Carolyn. Narrow Damariscove Harbor, replete with a rich history (the Mayflower overnighted here!), is where she and her children scattered their father/her husband's ashes last summer. Before he died of cancer last December, he told Carolyn that is where he wanted to rest. Being avid boaters, they had spent many happy hours exploring Maine's islands and coves, and this was one of their/his favorite places.

To keep his memory close to her daughter she purchased a pendant of Damariscove Harbor. We were honored to create a piece for such a beautiful and meaningful purpose.

As Thanksgiving approaches we'd like to extend a big thanks to everyone. Today marks CHART metalworks 1st year anniversary! What a quick year it was. In that time we brought our wholesale account total up to 59 with locations from Maine to Florida to St. John USVI, we launched a new website, we increased retail sales to an average 4-5 per week (and thanks to you, growing even more this holiday season), we reworked our entire line and added about 15-20 new pieces including an extensive men's line, we launched social networking, we added new packaging, tags, labels and shipping options and we were featured in numerous on line blogs, The Bollard, The Premier Issue of Maine Magazine, The Maine Sunday Telegram, Boston Magazine, Downeast Magazine and Stuff Magazine. We are proud of our accomplishments and grateful of the huge part you have played in our success. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts. Here's to a great second year and Holiday Season!

Hilltop Art Preview on December 3

CHART metalworks will exhibit THE ISLANDS OF CASCO BAY, framed works and pieces from our collection at the Hilltop Coffee Shop. The exhibit will run from Tuesday, December 1 through 31.

Colorful nautical images embedded behind resin in bronze or sterling silver are strategically placed on corresponding black and white nautical charts with a brief history of the island shown. Each piece is hand engraved by CHART metalworks founder Charlotte Leavitt.

Hilltop Coffee Shop is located at 90 Congress Street in Portland, Maine. Shop hours are 6:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. seven days a week. The shop will host a special reception during the biggest First Friday Art Walk of the year on Friday, December 4, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Beverages and refreshments will be served.

Today's CHART metalworks story is from Karl. Taking a cue from Cupid, Karl purchased a CHART metalworks bracelet for his wife to celebrate their first anniversary. Each of the links reminds them of important places and memories. The couple have spent Thanksgivings together with family in Oak Bluffs, their wedding was down the street from Edgartown Harbor, reception near Great Pond in West Tisbury, wedding pictures on the Menemsha docks, and many an afternoon wandering about East Chop.

Real Weddings Maine Promo

Our friend Audra, who is a wedding photographer, created a blog about destination weddings in Maine. A couple months ago Audra asked CHART metalworks if we would donate a pair of cufflinks for a pro bono wedding for independent documentary filmmaker Aaron Gaudette. He spent his life savings making the film about greeters of troops returning from war. As a result several wedding planners came up with the idea to throw a pro bono wedding for he and his fiance. We happily agreed by donating a pair of cuff links of Sandy Point, the location of the wedding.

This week Audra sent us a link to a video of the wedding, which we are thrilled to share with you. We are the opening clip of this video so you can't miss us!!

Later this month or next Audra will be coming to the studio to shoot a video and post on her blog. We are super excited and will let you know when it is up.

Today's CHART metalworks story is from Dawn, who ordered two belt buckles one for her good friend the other for herself. Dawn is a rower, up early for a run and onto the river to practice with her teammates. Back on the river in the afternoon. The water, the coxswain's commands, the power and rhythm of her teammates, and motivation are her friends.

Understanding the importance of friends and teammates we are honored Dawn chose us for two very special gifts. The first belt buckle is of the lovely island of Sanibel, Florida where her dear friend "L" has a special house she shares with Dawn and their rowing friends.

The second belt buckle is of the Elliot Bridge, the scene of a very challenging and exciting oar-on-oar portion of the Head of the Charles Regatta where her team came together and fought it out. Dawn was selected to be on a team in this famous rowing race after a year of hard work and dedication. This was her second time ever competing in this regatta!

Dawn tells us she intends to add other racing charms and pendants as time goes by to celebrate her passion for the sport. We applaud Dawn and thrilled to help her celebrate her achievement.

This week's CHART metalworks story is Sara M., who purchased a key ring of Five Islands for her best friend. It is stories like this one, which bring us the unexpected and most amazing joy. Sara has had a home in Five Islands since 1975, the year her son was born. The home has been a place of growth and a resting place for people in her life. She said one of her friends calls it "the safe house." Sara's best friend, who will be the recipient of the key ring, has spent much time at the home helping her maintain the property.

Sara said while the coast of Maine, has changed significantly throughout the years since she bought her property, the village has not been commercialized. The beautiful fishing village remains void of major hotels and resorts, with plenty of pristine waterfront and forests.

Emerald City Trunk Show

We're off to hang with the wizard, the Wonderful Wizard of Portland next Friday, November 6 between 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the city's newest gift shop Emerald City on Congress Street. Just follow the yellow brick road, or in case the owners don't get a painting permit, you could just walk down Congress Street to #611 near Haymarket Square while singing "Follow the yellow brick road, tra la la! Oh, you're off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz." So you might garner a few odd glances, with the economy turning around heading into a glorious holiday season what is there not to sing about!! We and Emerald City's owners Danny Hatt and Don Chouinard will be thrilled to see you. No costume necessary, though we are sure those ruby red slippers you pasted glitter onto will get some points.

Our bands are wide so if you visit a jewelry store to measure your finger, you should ask for thewide band ring sizer.

Another way to measure your proper ring size is to WRAP a piece of string around your finger. MARK the point on the string where it meets for form a complete circle. MEASURE the length in millimeters from the starting end of the string to your mark.

Our Florida trip was so productive we're only now getting to posting about some of the shops we'll be working with. Here is a shop we're ultra excited about in Venice, FL. Seaside Chic is a darling shop selling local artwork, hand made gifts, classic and fun brands such as Pine Cone Hill pajamas (love them - the colors, feel!!), and us! Basically objects that make you feel pretty (or handsome!) and happy.

I got an email the other day from a national magazine who is interested in running a possible story about us. My instructions were to take photos of the studio and the area surrounding it. Never needing an excuse to work the camera, I happily stepped outside to do my job.

It wasn't hard.

Everywhere I look I see beauty and inspiration down on the waterfront. As I strolled down to take this picture, there was an old man with his guitar singing some old Irish tunes basking in the sun tucked away behind the canisters. He spotted me and just kept singing. I stopped to enjoy the simplicity of it all...the music floating above the working lobsterman on their vessels down below, the sun putting warmth on our faces as the chill in the air reminds us that winter is nearing. When you live and work in a place like Portland, its hard to think it gets any better.

I sent my pics along to the magazine for their art meeting. I didn't comment about how they'll be fighting about which photographer gets to come to Maine and shoot these pics. I didn't have to. The pictures say it all.

We have so many fun stories related to sales of our jewelry we've decided to gift you with one each Monday.

Starting off with a favorite. Our first MONDAY CHART STORY.

These two life long best friends each bought Extra Small Silver Pendants of North Haven where their fathers grew up and they have returned to summer every summer since birth. When Mom got a peak at the girls new necklaces, she liked them so much that they returned and purchased a North Haven small pendant on sterling oval bracelet chain. This actually happens more than you'd think, with the design as much as the destination. A friend purchased one of our belt buckles, wore it and a week later (no kidding) we had four orders and just heard another friend is getting one for her boss. When word of mouth works like this what else do you really need in life? Okay, a lot but we're having a heck of a time just enjoying it!

Neighborhood

We love getting out for breaks at coffee houses around the neighborhood. Arabica Coffee House and Coffee by Design are two of our favorites. One of the great benefits we've found to living in a less populated area is you get to know your neighbors. Thus our coffee breaks often end up in social visits. We don't mind at all!

Planes, trains, and automobiles. Walking, hiking, biking, swimming, maybe juggling? However you are getting to wherever you are going, the journey is at least half the fun. The part when you daydream about the destination.

We are given so many wonderful locales to work with, we sometimes wonder how people got to those destinations. Near or far, urban center or remote destination. We have fun imagining the trip!

Final Days in Florida

Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel Island, Fort Myers, Pine Island, and Punta Gorda. Shopping districts, beaches, and waterfront dining.

Tampa, St Pete, St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, Safety Harbor, Lakeland, and Orlando. Vibrant downtown areas with historic buildings, gardens, sandwich shops, and some surprisingly reasonable hotels.

Day Five Florida

Still in Florida.

Yesterday we went to a real hip shopping district Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale. Our favorite for jewelry, gifts and artwork so faris the Gallery Seldom Seen at 915 Las Olas.

From there we headed to the the beach, which is reminiscent of some Californian Beach scene or how they try to portray California anyways in the movies and Bay Watch. For those who surf we recommend the Maui Nix Surf Shop, they seem to have everything a surfer could need. There are also two great resorts the Bahia Mar Resort and Marina and the Lago Mar Resort.

From there we headed to 17th St. where everything nautical happens, yacht dealers to chart manufacturers , marinas, docks, you name it. If you own a boat/are a boating enthusiast head to Charlie’s Locker at 1865 Cordova Rd.

Back in Miami Beach for a nighttime stroll along an outdoor pedestrian shopping mall in South Beach with great options for dining outdoors. Nooks and crannies where you can relax under the shade of a palm tree and read a book. Worth a stop if in South Beach.

We stayed at the Blue Moon Hotel, 944 Collins Ave in South Beach. Great quality for $100 a night in South Beach, great location, I would definitely recommend to anyone, it’s also named after one of my favorite beers.

Kicking off a week of posts today about some of the folks we call friends and neighbors. Dan is a good-looking, unfussy familiar face about town for the past two decades. He is also one of three owners of Brian Boru, a popular Irish watering hole in Portland, ME. People gather there at day's end to enjoy live music, Irish whiskey, great beers on tap, and a full menu.
